I like to tailor my teaching methods to each individual student. I know from taking lessons myself that no two violinist are alike, and it would be silly to teach as if they were. For my younger students, I really like to focus on the fundamentals of violin technique so that they can have a firm foundation on which they can improve. For younger piano students and beginners, I prefer to start them out on the Faber and Faber "Piano Adventures" method series. This series tends to be inexpensive, touches on classical exerpts while teaching students proper techniques, and builds on concepts in a way that solidifies the information in a student's brain. I enjoy accommodating students with the exact type of lessons they need. For beginners I use a slow approach at first, attempting to minimize the chance of bad habits. We begin with starting with proper hold of the instruments, left hand placement, and simple pizzicato; the same would be done with guitar. I found myself wanting to teach students, of all ages- anyone that had a desire to learn the cello. With regard to my private studio, I teach using the traditional method. I believe every student needs a foundation of classical music. If a student wishes to learn other genres, I am happy to support those interests as well. I teach music primarily through reading. I incorporate some ear training. I also teach music theory and music history within a given lesson, because it is my believe that theory and history assist students in having a greater understanding of why they are performing what they are and how to interpret the work.
