I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. For young children (3-9) I exclusively use the Suzuki method and require a lot of parental involvement. I am happy to start children ages 10+ as well as teenagers. Having been a product of a school orchestra myself, I will use a more traditional teaching approach. The adult beginner or adult returner presents unique challenges but I wholeheartedly believe its never too late to start playing an instrument. Alongside the Suzuki Method, I give each student the opportunity to choose a song or piece that they are passionate about learning. Some of my students learn fiddle and folk songs, while others learn video game music or songs from movies. For beginning students who are children, I like to use the Suzuki violin method. While they beginning to show progress Ill begin to include F. Mazas Melodios and Progessive Studies and the Wohlfahrt Studies combined with appropriate solo repertoire. For adults, I prefer to find out what their interest is focus on and I guide my instruction acording to this. I also like to include some Alexander Technique exercises to help my students manage their posture and to prevent getting hurt with the instruments position. Read More
