For beginning students I always begin with a methods book, I believe that good fundamentals are what makes a good musician, but I also teach ear training methods thereby giving the student the best in both worlds. I typically start my students by learning the basics of the instrument (i.e. how it is made, basic care, how to hold, etc.). For younger students, or those who are not experienced with reading music, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. If they are learning their instrument in school as well, I like to work through any music given by their teacher. Alongside the Suzuki Method, I give each student the opportunity to choose a song or piece that they are passionate about learning. Some of my students learn fiddle and folk songs, while others learn video game music or songs from movies.
