I´m a passionate, creative and joyful instructor who loves to teach and learn from new students and new experiences. In 2017 I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from University of Cauca, which is located in Popayán, Colombia, the city where I was born. Right now I´m finishing my Viola Master´s degree at Western Michigan University. Being a musician has given me the opportunity to travel to many countries and cities around the world like Moscow (Russia), Valencia (Spain), Santa Catarina (Brazil) and Boston (USA)! I´ve had the opportunity to share scenarios with amazing musicians and professionals who had taught me many wonderful things that now I would like to share with you.
My teaching experience begings while my undergrad. I began teaching private lessons part time when I was 19 years old in different academies in my city and since there, I have been teaching both in academies and at home. I have taught both violin and viola and some of my students are now persuing an undergrad degree back in Colombia. For me, flexibility is truly important, meaning that, even though I´m a trained classical musician, I understand and also enjoy not playing classical music all the time. If one day you want to play Mozart and next day you want to learn a tune by Queen, you´re more than welcome to let me know and we´ll do it together without any problem! To have fun during lesson time is very important to me...and I know it is important for you as a student as well, so, if you´re not having fun, I´m not doing my job well. I encourage you to have an open opinion about the lesson, so you are more than welcome to talk to me any time it is needed.
For beginning students who are children, I like to use the Suzuki violin method. While they beginning to show progress I´ll begin to include F. Mazas Melodios and Progessive Studies and the Wohlfahrt Studies combined with appropriate solo repertoire. For adults, I prefer to find out what their interest is focus on and I guide my instruction acording to this. I also like to include some Alexander Technique exercises to help my students manage their posture and to prevent getting hurt with the instrument´s position.
For me, the proper development of the student is very important, Not only his/her technique has to increase but also his/her love and passion for music! Nevertheless, it´s also important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. That´s why I create realistic goals for each student to achieve at each lesson. I think we all accomplish new things every day, does not matter if they are small. That´s why I consider important to let the student know the good things he/she has accomplish, not only during the lesson but during a certain period of time. I also encurage my students to talk to me about their feelings towards the lesson. I consider this important because in the classroom is not only the student the one who learns, but also the istructor. You will help me grow as well.
