Despite growing up in a family full of musicians, it took me a while before realizing that music was one of my true passions and wanted to share that love of music with others. I have been playing trumpet for nearly 25 years now, first starting formal lessons when I was 10 years old. I began teaching myself guitar in college and have been playing for almost 15 years. For beginning students that are k-12 I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to align with the public school music curriculum. For those 18+ or hoping to learn an instrument outside of school purposes I highly encourage students to pick out their own repertoire to learn however I'm more than happy to help with the process of choosing music. For those with a base line understanding of music we will still read from various methods books and play some standard repertoire but it will not be the focus of lessons. Read More

Ben holds a BM in Music Education (PreK-12 Instrumental) from Longwood University and an MM in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. While he majored in clarinet and performs primarily on bass outside of the concert band world, Ben is a multi-instrumentalist, performing with numerous ensembles on a number of different instruments. From my learning, teaching experience and work in music retail I am familiar with most of the method books in use, especially Standards of Excellence, Rubank, Essential Elements and others.
