I cater my teaching to the students needs as an individual and their goals. I am interested in fostering their inate musical abilities, as well as the musical skills they wish to obtain. If the student is in a school instrumental program, I always defer to the band director as the student spends more time with them. I will take the students progress seriously, and expect them to do the same, so I make sure the expectation to practice is clear. Read More

As a teacher in public and charter schools, I have directed choruses, small chamber ensembles, orchestras, and musical theater. I started teaching music lessons during college, where I excelled as a trombonist. Although I remain a brass teacher, I "made the switch" to singing in 2005. In 2006 I was accepted to graduate school for singing and historical musicology. I have had the opportunity to perform with some of the finest conductors and ensembles in the nation, and I bring my professional experiences into the classroom and the studio. Read More

Like most trumpet teachers, I introduce the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet, an everything-you-need-to-know book that the student will use throughout their trumpet playing career. However, I also incorporate a variety of other method, solo, and duet books throughout lessons with an intent of maintaining variety, both of material and the methods that the material presents. Each lesson begins with reviews of fundamentals (long tones, breathing, lip slurs, etc.), sight-reading practice and instruction, and instruction on the solo piece that the student had been assigned the week before. For beginning students, I combine multiple elements to understand the various aspects of their new instruments. With a combination of videos for inspiration, singing for audiation, and moving for connection to the instrument and how our muscles respond to it. My lessons rarely consist of sitting for the entire time. I believe that in the short time we have in lessons, it is more important to expose students to a variety of resources to investigate their new endeavor than it is to repeat repertoire for the sake of a quick result.
