For beginning students who are picking up their instrument for the first time, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. These introductory books are the ones I first learned from, and feature a wide variety of musical styles to give students an idea of the breadth of possibilities on their instrument. Once the student has a firm understanding of the basics of the instrument, or with students who have prior playing experience, I will turn to more standard method and technique books, such as Arban's Conservatory Methods or Clarke's Technical Studies. I began teaching private students while in college through a music store in Ellicott City, MD. I taught students from age 6 to 15. I had up to 15 students on varied occasions. I maintained students on and off throughout my 7 years of music teaching in public schools following graduating from college, but lost many students when I relocated from Baltimore to Lancaster. I just graduated from Temple University with my masters degree in Jazz Studies, but am versed in many styles of playing and composing. It is equally important to learn music from method books and through sonic exploration; I have personally learned a lot from books and while "noodling."When teaching trumpet (all skill levels), I use books including Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Schlossber's Daily Drills and Technical Studies.For guitar and bass guitar (beginner through intermediate), I start with Hal Leonard's Play Bass Today series. I teach beginner piano with the Bastien series and Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course.I also have a library of alternate method books and additional materials including excerpts, solos, duets, and play-alongs.
