Overview:

I have had a passion for teaching music since I was in high school, when began a private studio out of my home in 2006. I obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in 2014, and two Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan in 2014, in Trombone Performance and Chamber Music respectively. I was was the Trombone Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado whilst earning a Performance Certificate. I lived in Malaysia from 2017 until 2021, where I taught full time and gigged on the side, performing with brass quintets, variety jazz bands, a hip hop band, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

EXPERIENCE

From 2017 until 2021, I was the Brass Specialist at the British International School of Kuala Lumpur, where I taught group brass lessons, private lessons, directed ensembles, and accompanied students on international music festival tours. The last two years of my teaching there were plagued by pandemic, so I gained a multitude of experience with online teaching as we were in and out of school at various points. Prior to my position at BSKL, I was the Trombone Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado, and I taught after school low brass lessons at the University School in Shaker Heights during my undergraduate. I had a few students in high school as well, dating back to 2006.

METHODS USED

I can teach beginners out of any books they might already own, but if starting lessons with me, the books I have available to send to my beginners are Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. I have additional materials, like the LaFosse, for beginners who have a higher starting range than the majority. I write out personalized daily routines for all my beginners. For high school students, I help the student develop a daily routine which incorporates exercises from the Schlossberg warmups, Colin's Advanced Lip Flexibilities, Vernon's The Singing Approach, the Arban method, and sometimes others. In addition to helping high school and middle school students with choosing solo repertoire for auditions and competitions, I also require that they practice Bordogni or Concone etudes weekly and keep around sight reading material. Middle schoolers and high schoolers who have not yet used Bowman's Rhythms Complete should plan to move through this entire book with me as well.

LESSON STYLE

My students describe me as enthusiastic and passionate to an infectious degree! I bring lots of energy to lessons and make learning fun and easy. While I am highly critical in a constructive sense, I have never become harsh with a student. I teach with a great sense of compassion and duty in helping the student achieve their highest potential. Although we will primarily work in areas of weakness, I also like to help my students learn how to play on their own strengths so they can develop the confidence for positive performance experiences.
