I have over 30 years of teaching experience. I began teaching Music right out of college, instrumental, vocal and general music classes. As a Pastor I still directed musicals and I taught drumers how to play drumset and required them to play for my ministry once they were good enough. I spent many years making my living at teaching instrumental music privately in schools around the area I was pastoring. For beginning students I typically start with the basics such as hand placement and proper holding of the instrument. Next the focus is on learning basic reading of music and memorization of notes . After basic technique is mastered I then focus on the interests of the students and future lessons are tailored around the style and type of music; country, pop, classical etc.. that the student has the most interest in learning. I like to start beginning students on Pearson's Standard of Excellence books and then broadening out to other methods after they get a good grasp of the basic elements of their instrument. For beginning students, such as children I focus on developing strong fundamentals such as air control, mouthpiece blowing, and hand-eye coordination with their instrument. This slowly moves into rhythm and pitch reading for beginners. Intermediate to advanced students build on these fundamentals and also have the privilege of learning repertoire with performance possibilities.
