I grew up in the Cleveland area and learned to play trumpet in my school music program starting in the fifth grade, which is typical of my students. I went on to earn a bachelor of music degree from Baldwin Wallace University in 1978. I've also earned a teaching certificate for music K-12, through Cleveland State University in 1993. I start every student with basic terminology for the instrument. I work on bow technique and instrument technique very early on, I believe every student wants to play as soon as possible. Music should be fun and as such, if a student is not enjoying lessons anymore I do not push and leave the option to end up to the student and parents. In middle school, I began performing and teaching music during the summers at Vacation Bible School for children ages 3-10. Throughout high school, as a member of a variety of bands, I performed at a wide array of venues around New England. During this time, I ventured into song writing and musical arrangement. I also spent some time giving private trombone, bass, and guitar lessons in high school. I have taught private lessons and low brass instrutor for Marching bands. The groups I play in I am the lead trombone so I have a responsibility to teach my coherts the correct rythms, intunation and style. I do recordings for our Jazz band as well as lead trombone. I like to make sure that in my lessons students realize that learning an instrument is a marathon and not a sprint. I foster an environment that encourages them to ask questions whenever they are having trouble understanding a concept. I am always trying to find out how best to teach a student by trying to find out how they learn information. I am always happy to go at the pace the student sets, and I will always make sure that the goals we set week to week and beyond are realistic. Read More
