I aim to teach my students not just to be dependant on myself as the instructor, but to be able to problem solve and learn on their own if they run into a question and an instructor is unavailable. I started teaching private flute lessons to beginners in the Twin Cities area10 years agowhen I was in High School. I relocated to Duluth for college and continued my private teaching as I earned my degree in Music Education. I do expect regular practice outside of lessons; I do not want lessons to simply be a guided practice session. Ideally, students would fully prepare the assigned material for each lesson-- not that it needs to be perfect, but that I can tell that he or she has been working on it.
