My methods are fairly simple. No matter the age or experience level, fundamentals are key. This includes proper embouchure, good posture, effective warm ups, and a consistent practice routine. I tailor my teaching to each student's needs and interests. I emphasize overall musicianship in addition to learning to the fundamentals of the particular instrument, splitting most lessons 50/50 between fundamentals on the instrument and musicianship skills such as music theory, sight-reading, sight-singing, playing by ear, and composition or improvisation. A child will not learn to play an instrument overnight or in one week, the commitment to practice and keeping track of that practice is essential. Nothing helps us learn better than encouragement, even when it sounds bad. Any teacher can tell if a student hasn't practiced or put forth a good effort.
