I usually ask several questions first, about your goals in participating with music. I want to encourage friendly competition, to have fun and to decide how competitive you may choose to be later. Most people don't want to be super competitive, but many are talented to do so. Most people are in music for the overall enjoyment of it, and some realize friendly competition is a win-win. Being super competitive is not for everyone, and I don't blindly encourage it. Read More

For younger students, I like to start off with the fundamentals/basics to set a good foundation to what we will be learning in the future. I hope to instill a joy and passion for music in my students. Through our work on fundamentals and etudes they will learn the skills they need to truly express themselves when they perform. He had studied previously with another instructor and loved to play. I focused on material that would not only improve his abilities but provide him with something that he could play for people in his social groups. Read More

Since most of the students I teach are members of a band program, I make sure that most of my lessons are based on what is being learned at school. Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice. Constant acknowledgement of their progress each lesson the student more eager to learn. Even though the school program may require students to learn from specific material, I also tailor instruction to music they enjoy performing. Read More
