Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. For beginning trombone students, I typically work with the Rubank Elementary Method (old, but it works well), the Emory Remington Warm-Up Studies, and various material that I compose to help a student overcome their weaknesses. Scales make up a major part of any student's learning, and once a student masters the basics of the trombone, I move on to appropriate solo repertoire based on the student's progress and interests. I start every single one of my lessons the same way, by talking to my student. I ask them questions to gauge where they are at musically both with their performance and theoretical skills. I also generally spend the first few lessons trying out different teaching techniques to see which ones will be the most effective for that specific student. I want to be encouraging to my students in a way that makes them want to continue music. When students get older they have more opportunities to participate in other activities and it is important to instill that love of music within them. Each student will need different types of encouragement as they play, though getting to know the student I will observe the ways they need encouragement and incorporate these ways into my teachings. My teaching frames music practice as a process of playful experimentation and personal exploration. Based on the concepts of psychologist Carol Dweck, I use teaching language that promotes a growth mindset in my students, a mindset that allows for creative risk-taking and the necessity of learning from mistakes.
