For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time. My teaching experience began in high school, when I worked with the summer band programs of several local middle schools and gave incoming beginning band students a head start on learning the basics of brass instruments. I continued teaching similar programs in college, including middle and high school summer band programs that included sectionals, chamber ensembles, and small music theory classes. In my teaching, I like to incorporate improvisation and creative exercises as well as more traditional methods of learning. Read More

My teaching frames music practice as a process of playful experimentation and personal exploration. Based on the concepts of psychologist Carol Dweck, I use teaching language that promotes a growth mindset in my students, a mindset that allows for creative risk-taking and the necessity of learning from mistakes. I try to be tough, but always positive and supportive. I also teach the principles of deliberate practice, which allows students to practice effectively. Read More

Much of this depends on where the student is in their learning progression--if they are just starting out, then I will focus on the fundamentals of good trombone playing, and work with the basic books like Arban's methods for Trombone. I also have used the Hal Leonard series. But as soon as possible, I will move the student into both listening and playing assignments, starting with artists whose transcriptions are more accessible for both range and technique: Curtis Fuller (including transcriptions I created in college, which are really amazing for students), Hal Leonard's JJ Johnson collection, my own recordings and transcriptions, and Etudes for Jazz from Mike Carubia Jack Gale. My methods definitely vary depending on the level and experience of the student. However, the fundamental exercises and order of warming up is very similar throughout the different levels of experience. It would start with long tones, then we would move on to lip slurs, then scale exercises and after that we would love on to music and etudes. For beginners I would work on embouchure technique and figure out what works best for them, and at the same time is also efficient in improving. Read More
