I am currently employed in East County as the choral and band director for an incredible middle school. Before that I was the director of music, bands, choirs, and performing arts in Harrison, New Jersey, right outside New York City. I have a Bachelor of Music and Theatre Arts from New Jersey City University where I also performed as a graduate student enrolled in Music Education with a concentration in French Horn Studies.My pedagogy in both instrumental and vocal studies has allowed me to bring a unique and diverse perspective in the both vocal and instrumental ensembles. Beginning piano students who are children will begin with the Faber and Faber lesson books which slowly progress the student through techinque and rhythmic exercises built into easy memorable songs. After building a strong base of fundementals I will the begin to introduce and teach songs the student wishes to learn alongside traditional literature to continue the technical progress. Today we see a decline in schools' support for music programs and it saddens me to see this! Music has always been an outlet for me, and if students don't have a place to learn music or see a passion for it, they won't have a desire to stick with the learning process of an instrument. My teaching experience dates back to my high school, where I started mentoring younger kids and leading brass sectionals at my local high school. Throughout college, I began acquiring more students ranging from locals to fellow college students who were interested in picking up the trumpet as either a hobby or a secondary instrument. My goal is to help the student to have fun with music. If I am with a teacher that Im intimidated by, I will not play in a relaxed manner and it will not be fun. I think this is particularly important with young kids. If we make music too serious too soon, we can turn them off for life. I see myself more as a cheerleader than a critic in my role as a teacher!
