I discovered my love for teaching in High School when my fellow students would always come to me for music help or coaching. In college I took our Vocal Pedegogy class and it was the perfect fit. I was so interested in the subject I asked my professors for more and we started the Coker College Community Program together. As a double-major in psychology and music, I combine both disciplines in my teaching to help students learn in a holistic, effective way. I love implementing research-based practice and performance techniques to help students at home and onstage. I think that every student is unique. I tend to create a custom program for every student, based on his/her special talents. By special talents I mean student's psychological particularities and tendencies. Student can have a very good sense of rhyhm, for example, so I am going to give this student some pieces of Spanish composers, like Albenis or some rhythmical jazz pieces. Student might be very lyrical and romantic and emotional, so I am going to give him/her some Chopin or Schuber or Schumann pieces. Read More

For beginning students who are in a school music program, I start with whatever the preferred beginner's method that their band uses: usually Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As they progress I use a mixture of their music from school and etudes and exercises to improve their reading and technical abilities. I continued when I went to college, teaching both piano and drums to kids and adult beginners, as well as college students on campus.
