I prefer that my students play a mix of classical and modern music because I believe it's important to study and play various styles of music. Music theory is incorporated into the lessons and technique exercises are to students to increase finger dexterity and promote finger independence. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Standard of Excellence Method Book 1. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of those fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other method books and solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Fundamentals will still be a major part of every lesson even after the student has grasp them.
