I started teaching music classes in 1992. As a public school music teacher, I have taught students in grades 1-12. I taught concert band, jazz band, marching band, string orchestra, full orchestra, and general music. I have conducted a women's chorale and taught college as well. For 7 years, I trained music education students and supervised their teaching experiences. I have always believed that music is the International Language and can reach across the language barriers. Since then I have served as a substitute in Florida, and then returned to New Mexico where I taught in Farmington, Los Alamos an now in Albuquerque. It is hard to believe that I have been teaching students how to play a variety of instruments for almost 40 years now but feel energized to be able to focus on teaching privately again. Read More

I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More
