I like to bring in all genre's of music including rock and pop, folksongs, movie tunes just to name a few. I find that students learn quickly when learning music that is already familiar to them. I work with tapping rhythms and singing note names, then learn how to pluck the part and then finally add the bow. This is a step by step process that includes a progressive style of learning that only adds a new skill or concept after the previous one is mastered. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

I like to get to know all of my students, it's a unique challenge as a teacher forming individual lesson plans in accordance with the students personality. That is a big part of what makes teaching interesting, and I really enjoy when students and I can work together to play pieces that they want to play. It's not about progressing lightning fast all of the time. Music is more of a marathon and there is a ton of literature out there, so with students I always try to remind them of that and encourage exploring music as a world, and not as a competition with others. I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

I have spent the last 5 years studying to become a great teacher! In December of 2017 I finished my degree in Music Education at Brigham Young University- Idaho, and in August I begin my Masters Degree in String Pedagogy at the University of New Mexico. I am very passionate about being sure my students gain skills through music education that will stay with them beyond what they study with me. My students walk away with skills like perseverance, appreciation for art and culture, dedication, confidence through struggle, and a healthy growth mindset. Read More
