A big part of their progress was the scale routine that I told them to practice daily, as well as various other Etudes like the Burgmuller piano etudes and Kreutzer violin etudes. I tell them what they should work on in a straightforward manner and I keep every lesson positive. I try and make jokes to lighten the mood because I have had several very critical professors and I don't think that's what every student needs the majority of the time. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

As a beginning student who is starting from "scratch" I use the "Strictly Strings". book 1 for the basic instruction. As the student progresses I will add sheet music or may have a book the student can borrow. I will ask the parent to by a book on occasion especially if the child has a particular interest that would benefit from it, There is a wide variety of materials that a well suited for private lessons, but I have used the Strictly Strings" series of books and collaborative materials. Instruments: Guitar, Violin, Viola

My beginners start on violin, and the first few weeks learning the basics of position and posture. Then I start them with Suzuki Book 1 and supplemental rhythm and theory exercises. After book 1, I assess their progress and drive and either switch them to Barbara Barber's Solos for Young Violinists, or have them stay through Suzuki Book 2 and 3. If my students have interest in viola, I encourage them to stay on violin until they are in high school or even longer (through Mozart concertos) if possible. Read More
