As students progress into the advanced level, I use less method books and mainly focus on repertoire. A Memphis native, Stephen L. studied with legendary Jazz pianist Donald Brown at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville before heading to New York City to finish his studies and further hone his skills in some of the most well-known jazz venues in the world. I believe it is important that each student progress at their own pace, but I also believe in pushing towards difficult, but realistic goals. Recreational music making is alive and well. I remember coming across my first teaching experience where students wanted to abandon the printed page and just sit down and play from their hearts. For them, it was all about learning to play by chords and by ear. This approach changed my initial teaching style dramatically.
