Typically in the first lesson, I assess the playing level of the student by asking them general questions about what they have done with music so far. From there it is easy for me to determine what to begin teaching first. For beginner students, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. As an educator, I strive for patience with students making a good effort. I recognize that certain skill sets will take time to develop, and I make sure that all students are doing the right things as they practice. Between lessons, I set a small list of achievable skills and practices for students to do. These lists are tailored for each individual to grow every week. With each lesson, it is my hope that the students find the joy of music making, and develop a love of music in general that will last them their entire lives. Read More
