2009-2013: Marshall University COFA Merit and Talent Scholarship
I am a passionate and motivated instructor who is looking forward to sharing my love of music. I graduated Marshall University in 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. While in my undergraduate degree I had the opportunity to perform in every ensemble (Jazz Band, Wind Symphony, Orchestra, Etc.) Marshall University had to offer. I was also given the chance to perform all around the United States and meet/learn from some of the most talented musicians from around the world.
While in college I started giving private lessons, which helped me realize my true passion for teaching music to the next generation. I like to emphasize regular practicing on a consistent schedule. It helps develop a solid foundation and a true passion on an instrument. For students in my studio I have found that a combination of classical and modern music helps maintain a student's interest while still learning a skill. I encourage all my students to participate in everything musical (competitions, recitals, honor band, etc.). This keeps my students on their toes and pushes them to the next level.
For beginning students who are children, I start with basics and progress though Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. When the students a solid foundation I introduce them to repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital. For adults, I find out what type of music they are interested and build my instruction from there.
I strive to instill a passion for music within my students. It is important that each student progresses at their own pace and always walks away with something new. I sit realistic goals for each lesson; this allows the student to feel accomplished and satisfied. Acknowledging a student's growth and accomplishments builds a student's fire to progress.
