This will depend on the level of the student and if they are in a band program in a school currently. I want to teach lessons as a supplement to what a student is learning in school, so I will work with the music and method book they already have. If the student is not in a band program, I would recommend starting with the Essential Elements band method. We will start with reading music, basic tone production, and good practice skills. The most important parts of learning any instrument is reading music and posture/hand positions. On piano I typically use Faber's Piano Adventure series. I've found that this series teaches the fundamentals in a fun and easy way. On brass and woodwind instruments I would start a beginner with the Standard of Excellence series and supplement with the Rubank method books. With ukulele I like to start with Hal Leonard method books and then shift to Johnson's Ukulele Aerobics. Read More

Specific methods vary from student to student, depending on the instrument, however the fundamentals that make great musicians are the same. My student get trained in basic music theory concepts that help not just read music, but understand it as a second language. All students will learn a variety of musical styles, from classical to jazz, blues to pop. They will learn how each style is different, what they have in common, and fun ways they can be combined. I have been teaching piano for almost 20 years now in styles from classical to new age to pop and rock. I am currently teaching private lessons through the Guitar Center Lesson's programs both in their studios and online. In addition to teaching private piano lessons, I currently am teaching music courses at both San Diego Mesa College and Palomar Community College. Along with beginning and intermediate piano courses, I teach a wide variety of music classes including Music Appreciation, Music Fundamentals, Music History, and Music Theory. Read More

For beginner/intermediate students I use the Essential Elements method plus Suzuki when they reach a higher level of playing. My advanced students can expect to play etudes from the Schroeder book as well as Popper when they get to that level. I am open to teaching repertoire that the student is interested in, as long as the level isn't too far beyond their reach. For adults, we mostly stick to Suzuki and Essential Elements, but I have found that incorporating songs they are familiar with is helpful in their education. Read More
