I truly feel that meeting the students where they are at. At the first lesson I would bring the music necessary for lesson and get to know them. As I mentioned above, one of my favorite parts about teaching is learning from my students. I encourage my students to take chances, perform often, and to not be afraid of making mistakes. For all students, I believe some understanding of music theory and ear-training is a must. This does not mean boring, antagonizing hours of studying always though. Learning songs by ear and understanding why certain pieces of music function the way they do can enable a student to learn more on their own and interact more with other musicians.
