The most important parts of learning any instrument is reading music and posture/hand positions. On piano I typically use Faber's Piano Adventure series. I've found that this series teaches the fundamentals in a fun and easy way. On brass and woodwind instruments I would start a beginner with the Standard of Excellence series and supplement with the Rubank method books. With ukulele I like to start with Hal Leonard method books and then shift to Johnson's Ukulele Aerobics. Read More

My teaching experience began about 5 years ago, teaching guitar, piano, electric bass and recording techniques to children ages 6-18 at an overnight summer camp. Having my students form bands, small combos and even 12-15 people groups was always a good way to reinforce the importance of communication and teamwork. These groups helped my students hold themselves accountable, as well as made from an incredibly fun learning environment. Since then, I have taught students with a variety of abilities, and of a variety of ages. Read More

I think it is important for lessons to not only be instructional, but also engaging and fun. Being a great teacher is about learning from the student just as much as the student learning from you. It is impossible to be a great teacher without learning the student's interests, strengths, previous knowledge and background, and their goals in music. I like to introduce all types of music, because students may not know what they like or might be missing out on something they haven't tried before. Read More

Patience is my favorite virtue, and is imperative when is comes to teaching a subject as beautifully complex as music. Every student learns in a different way, and at different speeds. I aim to find every student's ideal learning pace, and deliver information in a manner that is easiest for them to absorb and retain. We set short term and long term goals based in the musical direction the student wants to go in. Read More

With beginning piano students, I use the Faber series of lesson, perfomance, theory and technique books. It's a great set that progresses fluidly and keeps students well rounded in their skills. In addition, I encourage students to use flash cards to practice with note names and musical symbols and terms. For percussion students, I would teach basic snare drum and 2-mallet techniques. This may come from basic rudiment lists, school curriculum, or any additional books appropriate for the student's level. Read More
