I am a graduate from the University of Iowa, where I received a BM in Clarinet Performance. I am from Iowa City and started playing piano at the age of four at the Preucil School of Music. When I was eight, I won the Iowa Music Teachers Association statewide piano competition. When I was ten, I started playing the clarinet. I am a three-year Iowa All-Stater, and I played at Carnegie Hall as part of the Young Adult Honors Performance Series band as well as in the Orfeo Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy. Read More

What I like to do is find out what my students know about music and then work from there. For instrumental I start with basics and play through scales to see how they play and how they can improve. For students that are younger or completely new to music, we would start with very basic general music terms and would become very close to the instrument of choice knowing the parts, how sound works with the instrument and how to properly play the instrument (close to the Suzuki method). my instructions are easy to follow no matter the age or ability level. I hold myself to the same standards that I hold my students. That is, I strive to become a skilled thinker and learner, and I believe that this process is life-long. I aim to perpetuate knowledge and inspire learning. More specifically, as a vocal teacher, I introduce students to an aria or art song and ask them to articulate their reactions, not only presenting a repertoire but also teaching independent critical listening and thinking. The most important parts of learning any instrument is reading music and posture/hand positions. On piano I typically use Faber's Piano Adventure series. I've found that this series teaches the fundamentals in a fun and easy way. On brass and woodwind instruments I would start a beginner with the Standard of Excellence series and supplement with the Rubank method books. With ukulele I like to start with Hal Leonard method books and then shift to Johnson's Ukulele Aerobics. Read More

I like to start out with new students by asking about them and what they want to learn and if they have any prior experience. I then like to make a custom lesson plan and practice schedule for my students, as well as book recommendations to work from. I use MIDI input keyboard and drumset for virtual students and then my studio for in person students. I prefer google meet but I can also do Zoom or FaceTime. Read More
