For beginner students, I use a variety of lesson materials. If the student is involved in band, I try to stick with whatever book their teacher has assigned them. In Seattle Public Schools, we use Standard of Excellence. I also add other materials as the student advances such as scales, etudes, and finger and rhythm exercises. Adding in music the student finds exciting also helps them feel more encouraged to practice! Read More

I am a graduate from the University of Iowa, where I received a BM in Clarinet Performance. I am from Iowa City and started playing piano at the age of four at the Preucil School of Music. When I was eight, I won the Iowa Music Teachers Association statewide piano competition. When I was ten, I started playing the clarinet. I am a three-year Iowa All-Stater, and I played at Carnegie Hall as part of the Young Adult Honors Performance Series band as well as in the Orfeo Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy. Read More

Consistent practice is more important than lengthy practice. While the results of your practice will increase with the time put in, practicing for even 5 minutes a day is better than skipping a day of practice. Practicing on just the mouthpiece is some of the most meaningful activities we do and this can be accomplished in under 5 minutes a day. More advanced students are expected to put in more time. On average, students should plan on practicing: Beginner: 1 1.5 hours/week (15 20 minutes/day) Intermediate: 1.5 2.5 hours/week (20 30 minutes/day) Advanced: 3 5 hours/week (45 60 minutes/day) Read More

With beginning piano students, I use the Faber series of lesson, perfomance, theory and technique books. It's a great set that progresses fluidly and keeps students well rounded in their skills. In addition, I encourage students to use flash cards to practice with note names and musical symbols and terms. For percussion students, I would teach basic snare drum and 2-mallet techniques. This may come from basic rudiment lists, school curriculum, or any additional books appropriate for the student's level. Read More

It is important that student does not lose his interest of playing an instrument. Therefore, I set some tasks for them that they can reach it. Once they see their progress, it inspires them to do more. Also, explaining a new material, I use a playful format, especially with kids who are hardly focused on the material. When they feel that they play a game, it will increase their interest and help to learn new stuff. Read More
