I am willing to teach out of any books my students bring to me! However, I usually start wind students with the Standard of Excellence books, since that is what local elementary schools use. Younger piano students start in the "My First Piano" series of books, then graduate to the Piano Adventures series of books. This set includes lesson books, performance books, and theory books, and can take students from a young beginner level to junior high/high school advanced playing. Read More

For clarinet players, it is important to have correct hand position, embouchure, tonguing, and other fundamental knowledges. With students who are just beginning to learn clarinet, I start a Russian book called "Clarinet School" by S. Rozanov and "Clarinet Studies" by A. McCandless. For improvement technique, I use H. Klose's and C. Rose's etude books. When a student has enough experience, we study different types of repertoire in various genres such as classical, romantic, contemporary music. Read More

With beginning piano students, I use the Faber series of lesson, perfomance, theory and technique books. It's a great set that progresses fluidly and keeps students well rounded in their skills. In addition, I encourage students to use flash cards to practice with note names and musical symbols and terms. For percussion students, I would teach basic snare drum and 2-mallet techniques. This may come from basic rudiment lists, school curriculum, or any additional books appropriate for the student's level. Read More
