When i graduated college I began teaching my own private lessons for piano and have been for almost 3 years in student homes. I start from 5 years old, all the way up to adults. For beginner's it's always good to start with the basic method books such as Hal Leonard or Alfred. As they progress, they can work on more technical exercises and music theory. Once they are able to grasp the fundamentals, or if they are starting at a more advanced level, it is always good to play a repertoire that includes music that the student is interested in. While some music that I feel is appropriate will be assigned as well, I encourage students to also seek out songs that they want to play themselves in order to keep them interested. Read More

My teaching style is integrative and interactive. I tend to write, record, and encourage local performances for my student base. I like for students and parents to have something to show for their efforts in music, whether it be a recording or performance. I tend to get my students more excited than most because I prioritize understanding my students’ taste in music. Mike comes from a varied and vast array of musical experiences. He has a bachelor's of music in jazz studies from UNC Wilmington and a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Maryland. A highly trained performer on classical and modern piano as well as traditional and contemporary drum set and percussion give Mike an edge in his teaching abilities. For example, learning how to be a team player, creativity, and the reward of daily practice teaches the student about success in many different contexts. I do expect my students to practice at least four to five times a week so that lessons are as productive as they can be.
