If the student is all play and fun or is all work, I adapt to whatever they feel within themselves and follow that. If a parent is forcing a child to learn without them enjoying it I will notice and will always find a way to create a middle ground as I can offer many different forms of exploration towards a skill. In other words, I recommend allowing your child to choose what they wanna learn and trust the process as I believe if someone truly enjoys something and is passnate about they will show sufficient improvement overall in music and in life. For every student, no matter the age, I first ask what they want to gain from this class/lesson. Once that has been determined, I make sure the student understands basic fundamentals of music using the Suzuki method, or the Feierabend method, depending on how old the student is.
