I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. For piano students I usually use Piano Adventures method books while supplementing with scales, pop and classical repertoire, theory, ear training, history and more. For ukulele and guitar we focus on strumming patterns, rhythm, chords, and repertoire anywhere from rock or pop to classical.
