To keep the student engaged in a lesson I always start with what the student wants to do first for about half of the lesson then stitch half way through to a professional lesson format to ensure progress is retained and homework is given at the end. I think it is important to keep the oral tradition of teaching alive so most of the content during lessons will be learnt by ear, though supplemental physical materials will be used. Learning primarily by ear will help build student's listening skills which will be useful down the road when rehearsing with others or learning new tunes quickly.
