My teaching experience starts when I was in high school. I taught private lessons as well as the lead instructor in our percussion class granted by the director. When I was in high school, I wrote to percussion scores for our marching shows. In my senior year, I was picked up by a musical touring group, and I was able to play drum set with professionals. I believe that one of the most important things a musician can do is to find and develop their own voice on their instrument. Listening to the greats like Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Jimi Hendrix, and Chick Corea illustrate how a unique voice can manifest itself and make the music so much more powerful. When I teach I tend to lean towards internalizing and interpreting a piece for what it means to you. This involves asking yourself questions that transcend what is on the page, and helping you think about the music in a new way.
