For beginning students who are in a school music program, I start with whatever the preferred beginner's method that their band uses: usually Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As they progress I use a mixture of their music from school and etudes and exercises to improve their reading and technical abilities. Private lessons are tailored to the needs of each individual. In general, we will focus on tonal and technical development through scales, repertoire, long tones, and other exercises. We will use etudes as well as pieces to learn about history and music theory. Students will work on not only their performance skills, but aural development as well. For beginners we will take it slow but hard work is always needed. I can teach you everything that I know,but it’s up to the student to take in what’s going on and work hard to get down fundamentals . Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
