Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. Our music teachers understand that every student has different needs and abilities and therefore the lessons will be planned with that knowledge in mind.

For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests. For more advanced students, I usually find a mix of repetoire relevant to their interests and technical exercises for them to refine and develop technique. Read More

I like to utilize the methods that work best for the individual student. I am not a rigid, one approach only type of teacher. I find the student is more likely to succeed when I adapt to their individual learning style. For example, if you are a more digital/visual person, then I have plenty of books and materials we can work out of. My teaching style is very unique in that its based off improvisation and ear training with music theory lessons. Having just one of the three is a great skill, but developing an ability to read, play and improvise music is what, in my opinion, makes a great musician. My teaching experience goes back to as soon as I finished high school. In my time at TJC I was a section leader tasked with leading rehearsals and lessons for the saxophone section. At this time I also taught as a marching band technician during the summer time for schools preparing to go to marching contests. At point I was also a substitute teacher for TISD.
