My starting point for my students is typically having them practice posture, hand position and proper mouthpiece placement. After this has been satisfied, I have the students blow using a breathing exercise. From this, I have the students play the first three notes out of their Habits of Good Musician Book 1. I have a variety of methods that I use to teach students.  I have used many Hal Leonard's band and guitar books, I use a wide variety of materials so that the students can achieve their goals. There is always new material coming out and I will also write my own technical exercises if the student needs them. For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests.
