I am from Beaumont, Tx where I began to learn saxophone and participated in concert band, marching band, and small ensembles. I then attended Texas Southern University where I graduated with a degree in music performance with a minor in African American studies. While in college I participated in marching band, wind ensemble, and became a member Kappa Kappa Psi national honorary band fraternity. I have also played with local ensembles around ranging from wind ensemble to popular music local bands in the funk, ska, and rock genres.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began while I was in college. Wanting to get experience I began giving out free lessons to gain experience around the Houston area. For a brief period I moved back to Beaumont, TX where I am from and also would give out free one to two lessons for the experience. I also have a younger brother who help began his journey with his saxophone. I helped to tutor him for the year and half I was there and would periodically work with him either online or when I would visit Beaumont.
METHODS USED
I find the best route with private lessons is start with student see where they are in the process and move forward with a pace that best suited them considering certain factors. Those factors include age, skill level, dexterity, body characteristics, and amount of time already spent with instrument. I like to have student have a lesson notebook and journal so that progress can be tracked more easily. I also tailor my lessons around not just understanding music concepts and techniques but also how to break them. I want to give the tools to perform and the tools to understand to complex into simple ideals.
LESSON STYLE
When on the path to conquering music one must understand that small steps are not just the best way but pretty much the only way. Along with that fostering an understanding in learning about one self and what pros may the used in aiding the student to becoming and better musician. Also what cons need to be overcome that everyone has in there own unique way. There are no short cuts but it is possible to maximize time well spent which I believe as teacher is not only responsible to do so with a student but also to teach the student how to do so own their own.
