I have been teaching band in the Dallas Independent School District for 25 years as of 2019 and privately as well. I really enjoy working with students privately the most. I have also performed professionally with several bands as well over the past 30 years and currently. For students, if any caliber, I start by teaching fundamentals. Fundamentals make it possible to enjoy playing the instrument. This includes things like scales, breathing exercises, warmups. After that I then will begin teaching skills. Often times, when playing an instrument, one skill is made up of multiple skills. I like to focus on the smaller skills and fine tune them so students can grow on their instruments. For beginning students I tend to start with them learning the basic elements of the instruments and go over exercises that help familiarize them with the instrument. I then will start the student in the Hal Leonard's Essential ELements of books. After they have gained a grasp of the fundamentals I will start to focus more on the type of music they will learn. Whether beginner or a bit more advanced, I have always liked to return to the basic foundational knowledge and techniques that must be understood well in order to advance and have a good sound and a good technique. For beginners in piano, I like to find books that the individual feels comfortable with and that they completely understand what they are getting themselves into. Every person is different. For snare drum, I like to use a book called stick control which helps students develop mastery in the way they play from precision to striking the snare drum correctly and the way they overall develop their style of playing. I have a strong love to teach and dont mind teaching anyone who possesses the will to learn. My approach to teaching involves the individual student and their dominant learning preference.
