I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. I started teaching back in high school to marching band students that wanted to play saxophone. That experience turned into a passion that carried into college where I taught music ed students as well as anyone else that wanted to learn the saxophone. As a teacher, I encourage consistent practice on a regular basis to all my students so they can achieve what they wish to achieve. I've found that holding realistic goals as well as maintaining a balance between teaching different fundamentals is key to keeping students motivated and excited playing the saxophone. Read More

I always find ways to motivate my students to practice on their own. I do this by trying to find music that fits their interests, helping them set long-term and short-term goals, and giving students etudes, repertoire, and practice techniques that are challenging, yet not overwhelming.
