I started teaching in 2009 in Mississippi. I taught 6th grade band (beginner), 7th grade band, and high school. I taught in Mississippi for 5 years and just recently moved to Tennessee. While teaching, I've given private lessons to some of my students after school and to some students who did not attend my school. I generally try to understand the fundamentals as to where the student is at currently. The basics are always where we drill the most. Playing the fundamentals must become like second nature as all the advance stages of playing and performing would always be difficult. Practice makes permanent. It doesn't always make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect, and therefore I encourage students to always make consistent time to practice and perfect their craft. Consistent practice with good technique and attention to detail is better than hours and hours of lazy, uninspired practice. Therefore, I try to set new challenges each week that are fresh and exciting which encourage active, perfect practice.
