My method of teaching is very detailed instruction. There are many books that tend to start with the assumption that you know something about music or that music is easy to just "pick up." I like to start from the students' most basic skill level and fill in all the gaps as they progress. This means that starting out might be a bit slow, but the learning curve for future lessons is shortened and students eventually end up further ahead than if they skipped around. Read More

If the student does not enjoy the lesson then they will not enjoy playing the instrument! With this in mind, I make sure to enforce the joy of music and focus on the fun side of playing. I recommend students learning at their own pace. This is done by setting appropriate goals and focusing on what each student needs to reach those goals. I also like to focus on a particular genre of music that the student likes, so that they are more interested in learning to play the songs each lesson. Read More

For beginning voice students, I typically start with a combination of folk songs and basic musical theater pieces as we establish proper breath support, tone resonance, diction and music reading skills. For beginning woodwind students, I find the Standards of Excellence Books to be a great starting point to establish technique, breath support, musicality and basic music reading while still allowing the capability to add beginning solo pieces depending on the student. My teaching experience dates back even before my college days, as I began teaching at the West Lousiville Performance Academy over ten years ago, and have been teaching student since that time either in a choir or private lessons. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
