For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I really take a look at what the student needs to learn and what the student wants to learn because I've seen a lot of students giving up because the institution or teacher is giving to much theory and very poor practice. I try to balance those responsibilities to a point that the student will always be learning something new as long as I work on their motivation and consistency of keeping up so they can learn how to play anything they like and want.
