During my time as a graduate teaching assistant for the University of Louisville, I learned the importance of effective and appropriate communication between students and instructors teaching class guitar, guitar ensembles, private instruction, and class ukulele. My guitar pedagogy background allows me to approach each student with a variety of styles and techniques that help streamline student progress and keep the passion of making music thriving. Everyone starts differently and everyone learns differently. I think that the material covered in lessons should be dependent on what the student knows and what the student is interested in. Even though theory can be complicated and at times tedious I think the most important goal is to be able to enjoy both learning and playing your instrument. I like to engage with my students on a personal level in addition to a student/teacher perspective. I've found that when my students are excited to see me each week, they are more willing to follow my instruction and try their best when it comes to practicing. An important aspect of this philosophy is giving the student a chance to choose their own music. Initially, they begin learning things at my instruction and through my own curriculum or the curriculum of the Bastien or Hal Leonard books, but I also let them choose one of their favorite songs for us to work on together.
