I studied drum lessons at 12 years old and studied jazz and swing drumming early on. I was a percussion major in college then spent a few years in Austin Texas traveling with country, rock and blues bands. Have played on over 20 records. I approach music from four perspectives in order to create an integrated foundation that caters to the learning methods of my students. My method is very simple: First and foremost I ask what kind of music my students like to listen to. Using this as a format I gradually add theoretical concepts to the extent the student is able to broaden his or her understanding of what they like. I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. I adapt to all learning styles and necessary modifications/accommodations they might have in a classroom. I encourage all students to explore and discover their own learning styles and I never use shame or comparison as a motivator. My lessons are always fun and upbeat, with lots of healthy celebration of progress!
