For my drum students, I will begin with basic snare drum technique and essential rudiments, while teaching them the fundamentals of reading drum notation. Once upon a time, one of my co-workers asked me to show her how to play some songs on the guitar. I can't remember exactly what those songs were, but I think it was Led Zeppelin, or something like that. I teach students to read music and provide them a firm foundation in chord structure and music theory that will enable them to play diverse styles of music.
