Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My teaching experience has been a part of my life for over 12 years starting with my leadership in my high school band specifically with brass instruments. I continued to pursue music education in college where I developed varied techniques and approaches to a variety of instruments through my time spent with some great teachers that identified my challenges and helped me to overcome them. My experience has always been with beginners and earlier musicians, but my tenure in Avery County has given me more experience with intermediate and advanced players that have auditioned and performed in All-District and other Honors Bands throughout North Carolina. I begin by first, of course, meeting with the students and talking to them and learning what they wish to achieve from their lessons with me as well as their level of playing at that current moment. After this first initial meeting and lesson I begin to help the student improve, working with them to achieve higher standards of performance at his or her own pace. I have been a music educator for over 20 years. I was a middle school band director for 14 years. All of my bands received first division and second division ratings at festivals and my students received first and second division ratings at individual solo and ensemble festivals. I love when I get to see my students fall in love with music and have great passion for it. I take an individualized approach to each student, and I also set realistic goals so they can meet them. I want to make sure students improve, while not getting frustrated or bored.
