My teaching experience dates back to high school. I was a student leader in the marching band, serving as the woodwind captain for the marching band and the senior student conductor for the concert bands. With these positions, I was able to tutor peers and work on expanding my knowledge of teaching music. My teaching experience has been a part of my life for over 12 years starting with my leadership in my high school band specifically with brass instruments. I continued to pursue music education in college where I developed varied techniques and approaches to a variety of instruments through my time spent with some great teachers that identified my challenges and helped me to overcome them. My experience has always been with beginners and earlier musicians, but my tenure in Avery County has given me more experience with intermediate and advanced players that have auditioned and performed in All-District and other Honors Bands throughout North Carolina. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. When in the field of Music Education, I do adhere strenuously to the Standards set forth by The Education Dept, which gives a clear understanding as to what they are supposed to learn during the Grade they have achieved. My lessons and objective come from those guidelines. I will not often deviate from it, although I will use my own discretion in determining how to meet the Standard. I use incentives to encourage the students to continue to progress, while getting a sense of accomplishment. I am encouraging, gentle, demonstrate techniques, and help where students struggle.
