I began teaching private drum set lessons during my first year as an Eastern Illinois University student. I taught lessons for just about three years while in college. At one point, I had about 14 students to teach and fit into my busy schedule. I've learned a lot from that experience and now know how to manage time efficiently with a heavy teaching load. At age 15 I was accepted into the Chicago Federation Of Musicians Union and began to work locally as a Professional Drummer in all types of musical situations through the Musicians Union. After completing my studies I continued to perform both locally and on the road. Some of the venues that I have performed at were The Newport in Miami Beach, The Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, Caesar’s Hotel in New Jersey, The Bop Shop in Chicago, Joe’s Be-Bop Cafe on Navy Pier in Chicago, The Green Mill in Chicago, Frankie’s Blue Room in Naperville, IL., Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, IL. and numerous Festivals and Concerts in Chicago and the surrounding Midwest. My teaching style again is pretty simple. They want to learn , and Im there to help them. Setting goals and acknowledging the accomplishments. Teaching the student vital necessities to help them expand their own vocabulary with drumming, as well as introducing them to new music styles is a very good way for any student to excel in a rapid fashion. If they are frustrated, I work out the problem with them. If they are very eager to learn a specific exercise, then I stay out of their way but remain present to lend a guiding hand. My goal is to create not just great drummers, but great musicians, and when I see my students exude joy in playing, making mistakes, trying again, and exploring unknown territories, I know that I am making strides toward this goal.
