The one book I use for my students is Ted Reed's "Progressive Steps to Syncopation For The Modern Drummer". I use this book for my own benefit on a daily basis. Its interpretation and application is limited only by the student's or instructor's imagination. This book is such a great resource for assisting the student in learning basic reading skills. For beginners on string instruments , I start with teaching them the major scale in the key of G, and then progressing to beginner songs. After a few songs are mastered, I ask each student to propose a song theyd like to learn based on their individual taste. For percussion, I focus on fundamentals such as proper sticking techniques and rudiments. Then I begin teaching them how to use the kit properly, as we work into basic rhythm, eventually progressing into learning songs. Read More

As mentioned in my methods, I customize my lesson plans based on my students goals and needs as a musician. I try to balance out the importance of theory and understanding music notation with having fun and working on songs or techniques that the students particularly desires to play. I take the time to ensure that the student thoroughly understands concepts and songs before moving on. Though I also will take breaks to try something new to keep the student actively engaged. In addition to drum set, I also teach djembe (West African), bodhran (Celtic), doumbek (Middle Eastern) and conga (Afro-Cuban). My favorite thing about teaching is watching students develop into creative musicians and finding their own voice. My playing and teaching has always been based in tradition, but not bound by it.
