Music should be fun. Period! Whatever the student's age or background, I will help them achieve their goals and have a great time in the process! I have been teaching (private and institutions) and performing for over 20 years. My extensive touring and professional performing background offers students a real-world perspective and continually keeps students motivated and inspired. Recently I was Adjunct Professor of Percussion Studies at William Carey University where I managed private lessons for all percussion instruments and wrote and directed for the marching line. There are so many methods to use. I started off in the church as a worship leader, piano player, and a drummer. I believe in learning to read music and playing by ear. Not all churches use hymn books but some do so that's why I teach site reading as well. Read More

Students typically can play this beat after just a couple of lessons! Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching friends and kids at church 12 years ago. I have been teaching students off and on in my home or at church for the last 4 years. I encourage students to make time for regular practice on a consistent schedule. Another one of my key points I like to emphasize for younger students and adults is less is more as it tends to help the students progress and gain a passion for the instrument in its most simplistic form. For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once the adults have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction towards that interest, all while keeping the lessons engaging and fun.
