I always meet a student where they are at and then guide them to gain the skills that they require for the goals they want to achieve. For all students, I start off with the basic fundamentals. Proper setup, posture, stick position, and technique. I then will hand write some examples and assess the student. From there I usually will use Alfred's Beginning Drum Set Method. Once the student has a grasp on that, I will focus on rudimental drumming and snare rhythms to accompany the drum fill portion of the Alfred's book. From there we move into more advanced books that include jazz drumming and complex rock beats as well as learning popular songs of the student's choice. Read More

For beginning students, we will go over the basics of single-note playing, as well as basic chords. We will also cover basic rhythms, so they can build up to playing their favorite songs. There are also many ways to be creative with music, and we may also play some musical games to make practicing more fun. Most importantly, I work at each student's individual pace. I understand that everyone learns differently and I am more concerned with my students learning and having fun than I am with keeping a schedule. Finally, I would like to say that I am more than happy to do lessons at student's homes. However, I feel like I am able to be more effective in my studio due to the fact that I have more resources there such as two drum sets, a 4.3 octave marimba, a concert snare drum, and a mixer and video recording equipment which can be used to record a student's performance in his or her lesson.
