I have been teaching drums and percussion since my junior year of high school, and have taken on some piano students in college. I've taken on students as young as elementary age as well as people from an older crowd. Regardless of the age, I've seen music change their lives for the better. Read More

After PipSqueak disbanded, I finished high-school exploring ska and punk music in the band PickUpChix, in which I did my first out-of-state tours, taking a van from Tulsa to play college shows as far as St. Louis. Outside of the band, I challenged myself to learn the rhythmic signatures among other cliques of friends, from the speedy double-kick footwork of death metal to the machine-rhythms of 90s hip-hop. I went to Oberlin College in Ohio to work w/ conservatory-grade musicians from globally varied styles and backgrounds. Read More

I have learned that every student cannot be taught the same way, so I tailor my instruction to the individual student. I encourage my students to set personal goals of achievement at their own pace. There is essentially more music than we would ever listen to in our lifetime. Read More

I learned very early on in my teaching experience that every student is different, and the lesson should be personalized to fit their needs. For true beginners, the basics are always established, and are frequently reminded; how to hold the drumstick, how to get the correct motion when striking the drum, and proper playing zones. Stick Control, Alfred's Beginning Drum Set Book, and The All American Drummer are three versatile books that my students will be exposed to, no matter what level of player they are. Read More

For my beginner students, I usually start with how to properly hold the drumsticks. If a student doesn't have proper technique while playing the drums, they won't progress nearly as fast. I then like to go into learning rudiments and basic drum grooves. Once they start to get comfortable on a drum set, I'll throw in some basic sight reading. The books I mainly use are "Stick Control" by George Lawrence Stone, "The New Breed" by Gary Chester and "Syncopation" by Ted Reed. Read More
